Luciana Conti

Photographer Luciana Conti possessed a curious geared camera with which she captured the world. She fashioned fantastical photographs, flawless likenesses that revealed the real character of the people pictured. A click, a whir, and she could peer into men’s souls…and display for all the world to see. In her corkscrew flying machine, she flitted from place to place, buoyed on crisp, citrus-scented breezes as she searched for the perfect picture, harmony between what she saw and what the image showed. Some say Luciana was a thief of truth, stealing secrets and purging pretense, spreading discontent along the way. And to that we say, “Indeed, she was. And a truly great one.”

Wolfgang Masterssen

Skimming peaks and valleys with his mischievous machine, Wolfgang Masterssen gleefully conducted smashing symphonies, a relentless demand that people wake from the stupor of their lives. At each landing he wove melodies of fortune and fame and fantastic feats. He filled heads with musical dreams, and hearts with lyrical lore. As he flew away, crowds cried for more, lusting for one last taste. Some say Wolfgang was an enchanter strumming to the beat of a devilish drum, inflaming passions and spreading rebellion. And to that we say, “Indeed, he was. And a truly great one.”

Captain Cornelius Weatherbee

Captain Cornelius Weatherbee was a restless reed of a man with a winning personality. With his tricorn hat and thinly-curled moustache, his appearance on the horizon cowed even the heartiest of men. Yet belying this gruff exterior, his clever machine was forever lifted by winds, no matter which direction they blew. Backed by spirits unknown, he was propelled by this wind, riding their drifts toward whatever – or whoever – needed finding. Some say Weatherbee was a mindless wanderer, a man with his head in the clouds and not a penny of sense. And to that we say, “Indeed, he was. And a truly great one.”

Friedrich and Gretchen Wagner

Physician pioneers Friedrich and Gretchen Wagner were hailed as wandering wizards, renowned for the medical miracles that followed in their wake. Wherever they went, whispers of, “The Doctor is here,” flowed through the citrus-scented air.

Friedrich and Gretchen Wagner thought this was superstitious hogwash. For they were expeditionist scientists with a plan: they pursued a panacea, a cure for all the world’s ailments. Pointing their majestic balloon-airship toward far-flung lands, they used their mobile laboratory to treat patients and collect concoctions in hopes of refining their restorative remedy. Some say Friedrich and Gretchen were full of hot air, shameless charlatans who seized resources for their own ends. And to that we say, “Indeed, they were. And truly great ones.”

Antoine Favreau

Antoine Favreau was a courtly courier, procuring precious parcels and transporting them with ease. Cutting a fine figure in his formal suits, the loftiest lords and ladies welcomed him into their inner circle, valuing his sophistication as much as his discretion. And discretion he had, handling the sensitive, sometimes seedy requests of his superiors. But with entrée into the upper echelon came access to its secrets, knowledge he held close…just in case. Some say Antoine was a fetching flatterer, captivating courts and heeding their command, regardless of the nature of the goods he procured. And to that we say, “Indeed, he was. And a truly great one.”

Isadora Cortez

Isadora Cortez was a liberator, known for giving wings to that which could not fly – and was not hers to set free. But to be fair, she only took that which had already been unjustly taken. With a mischievous grin and a black mane veiling her wild eyes, she captured fortune in great, heaping fistfuls. Near and far, she pocketed her plunders and stealthily fled with rings of pearl, golden amulets, and sapphires the size of plums. Some say Isadora was a frolicking bandit bounding through a darkened sky, a tip-toeing trickster who believed life was hers for the taking. And to that we say, “Indeed, she was. And a truly great one.”

Rudolphus Benedict

Rudolphus Benedict was a traitor.

Rudolphus Benedict was a hero.

Rudolphus Benedict was a bit of a contradiction. With a glint in his eye and a cheeky smile, he charmed his way out of any bind, leaving staunch defenders in his wake. Such a man could never turn on his Colonel, they cried, as they hid him and supplied his trips. For Rudolphus held a vast collection of fearsome and fascinating inventions and a fondness for increasing their number. He traveled the world ’round, rescuing them from mundane men, those without vim or vision. Some say Rudolphus was a skillful swindler, greedy for glory. And to that we say, “Indeed, he was.
